CTCBA Luncheon Meeting Calendar
Bimonthly meetings are generally held on the fourth Thursday of the month (11:30 am until 1:30 pm). The fee for attending these meetings is $20 for members and $25 for non-members, payable at the door. The price of lunch is included.
(Note: speakers will begin promptly at 11:30 and lunch will be served immediately following the presentation.)

Summary:

This informative and practical workshop, lead by former Wage and Hour investigator Karen Dulaney Smith, will cover the latest significant court cases, recent DOL opinion letters, and provide an insider’s look at the way the Wage and Hour Division functions.  Participants can expect plenty of time to ask questions and leave with several ideas about how to monitor and improve compliance in their own workplace.

Properly classifying workers

Karen Dulaney Smith will be prepared to handle questions from special interest groups such as public agencies, small businesses, large corporations, and specific industries such as retail, service, and transportation.

About the Presenter:

Karen Dulaney Smith investigated employers under the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, government contract laws and other Wage and Hour laws as a Wage and Hour Investigator with the Department of Labor.  She regularly interacted with employer and employee associations, attorneys, accountants, and other governmental agencies to provide technical compliance.  Since 1999, Karen has worked as a Wage and Hour Consultant, providing consulting and expert testimony for both management and plaintiff’s employment law attorneys, associations, major corporate clients, public agencies and small businesses.  Scope of services includes:  interviewing employees and management; analyzing time and pay records, corporate documents, legal and regulatory rules and opinions; advising attorney and clients; negotiating with the Wage and Hour Division; creating compliant business plans and job descriptions, and helping clients make decisions on a variety of related issues, such as organizational structure and employee relations.  She also provides technical expertise and participates in strategic planning with groups attempting to influence legislation and regulation of US labor practices.

Karen received her B.A. in English Literature from Southwestern University and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Austin Independent School District.
